Powerful Positivity vs. Toxic Positivity

Positivity is often celebrated as a powerful mindset that can transform lives and create a more optimistic outlook. It can inspire resilience, motivation, and a sense of hope in challenging situations. However, there is a fine line between genuine, empowering positivity and a distorted version known as toxic positivity. In this article, we will explore the difference between these two concepts and how we can embrace the former while avoiding the pitfalls of the latter.

The Power of Positivity:

Positivity, when harnessed in a healthy and authentic manner, has the potential to bring about significant benefits in our lives. Here are some key aspects of powerful positivity:
  1. Acknowledgment of Emotions: Powerful positivity does not dismiss or ignore negative emotions. Instead, it acknowledges their existence and allows us to experience and process them in a healthy way. It encourages self-reflection and emotional awareness, helping us understand our feelings and find constructive ways to address them.
  2. Realistic Optimism: Positivity does not mean denying reality or downplaying challenges. It involves maintaining an optimistic outlook while recognizing the difficulties and setbacks that may arise. By focusing on solutions, growth, and possibilities, powerful positivity enables us to navigate obstacles with resilience and determination.
  3. Authenticity and Honesty: Powerful positivity encourages authenticity and honesty with ourselves and others. It recognizes that it's okay to have moments of vulnerability and to share our struggles. By embracing our true emotions and experiences, we can build genuine connections and seek support when needed.​​

The Pitfalls of Toxic Positivity:

Toxic positivity, on the other hand, involves an overemphasis on maintaining a positive facade at all costs. Here are some characteristics of toxic positivity to be mindful of:
  1. Invalidating Negative Emotions: Toxic positivity dismisses or invalidates negative emotions, often by suggesting that one should "just think positive" or "be happy." This attitude can trivialize genuine struggles and make individuals feel guilty or ashamed for experiencing negative emotions, leading to suppression and a lack of emotional healing.
  2. Ignoring Real Challenges: Toxic positivity tends to overlook or minimize real challenges, promoting a "good vibes only" mentality. This can prevent individuals from acknowledging and addressing problems, as they may feel pressured to maintain a constant state of happiness and avoid confronting difficult situations.
  3. Suppression of Authenticity: Toxic positivity discourages vulnerability and masks genuine emotions. It creates an environment where individuals feel compelled to always put on a cheerful front, even when they are hurting inside. This can lead to a sense of isolation and a lack of support, as people may fear being judged or misunderstood if they express their true feelings.

Finding Balance

To cultivate powerful positivity while avoiding toxic positivity, it is essential to strike a healthy balance. Here are some suggestions:
  1. Embrace Emotional Authenticity: Allow yourself to experience a range of emotions without judgment. Acknowledge and validate your feelings, both positive and negative, and give yourself permission to process them in a healthy and constructive manner.
  2. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind and compassionate towards yourself during difficult times. Treat yourself with the same care and understanding you would offer to a friend. Understand that it's natural to have ups and downs, and growth often comes through challenges.
  3. Foster Supportive Connections: Surround yourself with people who allow you to be authentic and accept you as you are. Cultivate relationships where you can openly share your experiences, challenges, and emotions, knowing that you will receive support and empathy.​

    Mindy is also a licensed mediator, communications coach, and conflict resolution practicer.  As a mediator, she has worked both in private practice and as a court appointment mediator at her local county courthouse.

    Through her innovative approach, she assists clients in examining their limiting beliefs, questioning their assumptions about how the world works, and releasing the notion that they are anything less than perfect. As a result, individuals who work with Mindy cultivate the ability to stand firm in their beliefs, live authentically and decisively, and discover an experience of life that is easy and graceful.

    In 2021, Mindy founded How to Be Human and Entreprenerd. These programs have enabled her to share her wisdom and knowledge with a broader audience in service of her vision of helping others live authentic lives This, in turn, has empowered more individuals to lead their most TRUE and COURAGEOUS lives.

    ​When she is not working, Mindy can be found playing outdoors in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, creating art, spending time with friends & family, or with her nose deep in a book.
